How to play

  1. Pick a mode — Classic, No walls or Versus — and, if you like, the speed, how many apples lie out at once and the size of the board.
  2. Press an arrow key (or W, A, S, D) or swipe on the board to set the snake moving. It keeps going until you turn it.
  3. Steer into an apple to eat it: the snake grows one square longer and a new apple comes up.
  4. The round ends if the snake runs into the edge of the board or into its own body. In No walls the edges lead round to the other side. Press Space to pause.

Why play snake here

Three ways to play. Classic is the game you remember: the edge of the board ends the round. No walls lets the snake slip off one side and come back in at the other, so the only thing in its way is its own tail. Versus puts computer snakes on the board after the same apples, and a computer snake that runs into another leaves apples behind.

The game is yours to set: three speeds, one, three or five apples on the board at once, and three board sizes, with the board shaped to fit your screen. The snake glides from square to square, the arrow keys, W A S D and swipes all steer it, and the backing tune keeps the snake’s pace.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play the snake game?

Steer the snake around the board and into the apples. Every apple makes it one square longer, and a new one comes up. The snake keeps moving on its own, so the skill is turning in time: the round ends if it runs into the edge of the board or into its own body.

What are the controls?

On a computer, use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D to turn, and Space or P to pause. On a phone or tablet, swipe on the board in the direction you want to go; a second swipe can follow without lifting your finger.

What is the No walls mode?

In No walls the edge of the board is open: the snake goes off one side and comes back in at the opposite side, heading the same way. The round only ends if it runs into its own body.

How does Versus work?

Versus adds one to three computer snakes, depending on the board size, that go after the same apples as you. If your snake runs into another one, the round ends; if a computer snake runs into yours, it stops, leaves a line of apples behind, and comes back a little later somewhere else.

How do you grow a long snake?

Plan for the tail. Keep the open space in one piece rather than cutting the board in two, run along the edges while the snake is long, and turn a little early: the snake moves on with every beat. A slower speed gives you more time to think, and more apples on the board means a shorter trip to the next one.

Is it free to play, and does it work on phones?

Yes. Snake here is free, with no download and no account. It runs in the browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone, and Full screen gives the board the whole screen.
