How to use it
- Tick the puzzles you want. Each one has a theme, and every answer in it belongs to that theme.
- Choose large print for bigger squares and bigger type, and decide whether the answer key should print at the end.
- Look over the sheets below. The numbers in the squares match the Across and Down clues, and the number in brackets is how many letters the answer has.
- Press Print. Your printer’s Letter or A4 setting is fine: each puzzle fits one page with its clues.
Why this one
A lot of crosswords are hard for reasons that have nothing to do with knowing words: a clue that is a pun, a fill-in with a name you have never heard, an abbreviation that only makes sense once you have seen it a hundred times. These puzzles leave all of that out. Each has one theme and every answer sits inside it, so when a square will not come you can reason your way in from the crossing words, and the clues say what the thing is rather than trying to trick you.
The grids are open rather than packed: words cross where they meet and the squares in between are simply left blank, so the page uses far less ink than a solid newspaper grid and the squares can be large. The large print option makes them larger still, with clue type to match, and each puzzle keeps its clues on the same page as its grid.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get a PDF?
No, and you do not need one. The puzzles print straight from your browser — and if you do want a file, use your browser’s “Save as PDF” option in the print dialog.
How hard are these crosswords?
They are easy on purpose. Every puzzle has a single theme, every answer belongs to it, and every clue is a plain description with the number of letters in brackets. There are no puns, no abbreviations and no obscure fill-in words.
Can I print large print crosswords?
Yes — tick “Large print”. The squares and the clue type both get bigger. A large puzzle with all its clues can run to a second page.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The answers print after the puzzles, several to a page, each as the filled grid. Untick the box if you would rather hand the puzzles out without it.
Will it fit Letter and A4 paper?
Yes. Each puzzle is sized to fit either, grid and clues together, so the print dialog’s default paper size works.
